Did you know you can commission a custom sculpture and/or installation by Carson Fox?
One of Fox's most recent and local installations is Blue Ombre displayed on a 14 x 15 foot arch in Temple University's Charles Library. The library was recently remodeled, creating room to reimagine the art they have in the space, which is exactly what Susanna W. Gold, Ph.D. did. Gold is a local art historian and independent curator from Bryn Mawr. She reached out to Fox in March 2020 after being tasked with curating art for the library's contemporary art collection. Despite Fox's enthusiasm for the project, the timeline was delayed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Carson Fox completed the installation of Blue Ombre in July 2020. The piece is made up of ~8,400 blue resin flowers which completely fill the arch. Colorful flowers are a common theme in Fox's private and public installation work. The artist embraces the intense imaginative experience that is sparked in the viewer from observing a large, concentrated mass of bright color. She also admires the feelings that flowers represent, whether it be loss, grief, hope, love, or joy, the possibilities are limitless.
Fox began expanding her use of floral imagery after her parents' passing in 2000. At first, they represented grief, but then she looked to flowers as a vehicle for uplifting her soul and mindset through difficult times. Fox comments that this ideology crossed over into Blue Ombre, as she viewed it as a tribute to the victims and families impacted by COVID-19.
